Rock Wool Flat Pack Container Micro-Apartments in Germany

In Germany, urban micro-apartments must balance efficiency, regulatory compliance and modern design. A project using 18㎡ flat pack modules created multi-storey micro-living blocks by stacking and joining units horizontally and vertically to form larger apartments and shared spaces.

Rock wool sandwich panels were selected for the main external walls to meet strict fire safety standards and provide solid acoustic insulation between units. On selected façades, sections of the wall were replaced with glass curtain panels to allow daylight penetration and create a contemporary, city-style appearance.

Inside, SPC flooring delivered high durability and easy maintenance for long-term rental use, while bamboo wood fibre wall boards were used in living areas to soften the interior and reduce the “industrial” feel of container-based construction. Different door and window styles were applied—sliding balcony doors for terraced units, larger fixed windows for studio apartments—helping tailor each unit to its specific layout.

Some modules incorporated small terraces, and roof sections were prepared as flat rooftop areas for future communal gardens or seating spaces. The result was a modular micro-apartment building that complied with technical requirements while offering a modern, attractive living environment.
